One of the most top searched questions on google in 2017 was how to get rid of belly fat. Belly fat is a stubborn, clingy and soul destroying pain in our arses and we felt that it was about time that we told the world how to get rid of it once and for all.
Full disclosure: There’s no magic cure for belly fat. That stubborn flab around your middle is determined to stay and no amount of crunches will change its mind. The only real way to get rid of belly fat is following and sticking to these steps below. Forget the fad diets and hottest new weight loss trends, keep it simple and that stubborn belly fat will just melt away.
Step 1: Cut your portions
Step one is the most obvious of them all so we thought we’d get it out of the way first. Cut down your portions to cut down your waistline.
It’s surprising how many of us believe that exercise is the be-all-and-end-all to losing weight. To truly lose weight and keep it off, did you know that it’s actually 75% diet and only 25% exercise? We’re kind of kicking ourselves over the amount of time that we spent at the gym seeing little to no results.
The first step to reducing that belly fat is sorting out your diet. We’ll go into more detail in step 2 about diet but first things first, make sure your portion size is under control. If you struggle with portion sizes as a lot of us do, try investing in a portion plate. Using a portion plate can really help you to see exactly what your eating and make sure that your plate is filled with the right amount of food groups. Eventually, you’ll be dishing out the correct portions with your eyes closed but we all need a little help once in a while.
Step 2: Sort out your diet
As made clear in step 1, your diet is 75% of the key to getting rid of belly fat.
The word ‘diet’ is enough to send chills through the warmest of bones but it doesn’t have to be the nightmare that we all think it is. Sorting out your diet can be really simple, it’s just about finding what’s right for you.
Here’s our top two tips on how to diet without even feeling like you are and the two most important tips for saying goodbye to that belly fat:
- Swap the cooking oil for fry light! We all love fried food so why give it up? Instead, just change what you are cooking it in. We recommend using something like Frylight cooking spray, you can save well over 100 calories a time by simply switching it up a little.
- Stock up on the greens! Nutrition law states that the majority of your meal should be the good stuff and by the good stuff, we mean fruits, vegetables or salad. We’re not telling you to become a vegetarian or to start eating like a rabbit, just bulk up your plate with a few more greens. Step 3: Eat More!
Yep, you read that right. Eat more. Food is not the enemy here guys! Somehow the human race has become obsessed with food and got it into their brains that food is somehow… bad. It’s not. Period. Food can be an incredibly, delicious thing and get ready for this… actually help you to lose belly fat! Eat the right foods and you can stay full all day long and still lose inches around your middle.
We recommend breaking your meals into 5 smaller portions a day. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and tea. Throw some snacks into there too if you’re feeling fruity.
Eating more meals throughout the day will naturally make you want to eat less at each meal and will help your digestion system to break down that food a little easier. The easier that your food is broken down, the less likely it is to stick around and cling to your hips.
Step 4: Exercise
Okay, so it’s time to talk about the other 25% percent of that weight loss key: Exercise.
Exercise is not the body crippling, tear-inducing, muscle killing thing that we all believe it is. Exercise is actually anything that gets your heart rate up!
Our top tip for exercise… Make it fun!
Instead of pounding the treadmill every day try turning on the tunes and blasting the volume while you dance around the house like a crazy person. Sounds strange, but doing something like that get’s your heart rate rising, makes you break a little sweat and most of all, it’s a laugh!
There are all sorts of fun activity that can help to melt the middle, check out this list below:
- Nature walks
- Shopping! (Go window shopping for the day and you could hit around 10,000 steps without even realising it!)
- Sex… (definitely gets the heart rate up!)
- Housework (not as fun as the rest but does wonders for your midsection!)
