With the extraordinary Demi Lovato’s world tour – Tell Me You Love Me – fast approaching, we felt it was only right to inform you all of everything you need to know about this incredible lady and if you weren’t a fan before this post then you sure as hell will be!
Demi’s life and struggles have been well documented over the years and she herself has been very open and honest about the things she has been through; never more so than in her Youtube documentary Simply Complicated (You can watch the full video by clicking this link). In this documentary, she speaks openly about her struggles with drugs, eating disorders, mental health and coming to terms with having an absent father. This documentary has been commended by Ellen Degeneres who said during an interview with Demi ‘It’s [documentary] so raw and so honest and you share so much about yourself’ Demi then want on to say ‘I was very nervous to talk about some of the eating disorder issues because it’s something that I still struggle with and I’m in recovery from, but it’s a process and I felt like I really wanted to be open and honest with my fans and show them that I could have shown the documentary and it have been this happy ending story but it wouldn’t have been realistic.’ She continued, ‘I still deal with things and I wanted to show my fans that it’s still a daily struggle with certain issues but I’m fighting hard and you [fans] can continue to fight hard and live the life that you deserve.’
We’ve always thought incredibly highly of Demi for her openness when discussing her issues but for those of you that don’t know the full story of miss Lovato’s life, here’s what you need to know.
1. The very beginning
Demetria Devonne Lovato (Demi Lovato) was born to Dianna Hart and Patrick Lovato on August 20, 1992 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and was raised in Dallas. She has three siblings, Madison De La Garza (Best known for starring in Desperate Housewives), Amber Lovato and Dallas Lovato.
2. From stage to music
In 2008, Demi rose to fame by starring in the film Camp Rock alongside the Jonas Brothers but her first ever role was at the age of 7 in Barney & Friends and she also starred in her own show Sonny with a Chance. Her career-changing role in Camp Rock was then followed by the release of her first album Don’t Forget later in 2008 and her second album Here We Go Again was released in 2009. She has since gone on to release a further two albums and to become one of the biggest stars in the world as well as being a judge on the Xfactor between 2012 and 2013!
3. Bullied and Broken
As a child, Demi was severely bullied and begged her mum to be homeschooled after seventh grade, she received her high school diploma after being homeschooled in 2009, a year before she was meant to graduate.
In Simply Complicated she talks about how the bullies would make hate petitions about her and send them around to be signed. This bullying led to Demi developing a severe eating disorder, emotional problems and issues with her mental health and because of this, she pulled out of a tour she was on with the Jonas Brothers at the time to seek help in 2010.
Demi has admitted to self-harming and released a documentary about her time in a treatment centre called Stay Strong.
In 2011 Demi revealed that she suffers with Bipolar disorder.
From 2008 onwards, Demi’s substance abuse spiralled out of control. She spoke out about trashing hotel rooms, abusing drink and drugs and having the people around her genuinely be scared for her safety. Luckily, Demi accepted help and is now clean and sober, able to stand and talk honestly and openly about her past and current struggles as a role model for all those struggling with something similar.
5. Loved by all
In 2012, Demi won a People’s Choice Award for favourite pop artist and in the same year became the new ambassador for Secret’s ‘Mean Stinks’ campaign to help end bullying in schools.
On her 18th birthday, she brought her family a Mediterranean style house because being able to give that to them was the best gift of all!
Demi continues to demonstrate her passion for helping others and on her new tour it has been said that she will be offering councilling to her fans that attend.
Don’t you just love Demi Lovato!
